In physicist Stephen Hawking's brilliant opus, A Brief History of Time, he presented us with a bold new look at our universe, how it began, and how our old views of physics and tired theories about the creation of the universe were no longer relevant. In other words, Hawking gave us a new look at our world, our universe, and ourselves.

Now, Hawking presents an even more comprehensive look at our universe, its creation, and how we see ourselves within it. Imagine sitting in a comfortable room listening to Hawking discuss his latest theories and place them in historical context with science's other great achievements--it would be like hearing Christopher Columbus deliver the news about the new world.

Hawking presents a series of seven lectures in which he describes, more clearly than ever, the history of the universe as we know it. He begins with the history of ideas about the universe, from Aristotle's idea that the Earth is round to Hubble's discovery two millennium later that our universe is growing.

Using this history as a launching pad, Hawking takes us on a fascinating journey through the telescopic lens of modern physics to gain a new glimpse of the universe--the nature of black holes, the space-time continuum, and new information about the origin of the universe. He uses this scientific basis to come up with a "unified theory of everything" that the author claims will be "the ultimate triumph of human reason."

"Stephen Hawking was a good teacher: he was clear, asked good questions, gave honest answers. And he also had a contagious enthusiasm about tackling complex problems.

Now that he is no longer with us, he remains with us through his writings. This book makes his present and endearing."

The Theory of Everything The Origin and Fate of the Universe Audible Audio Edition Stephen W Hawking Michael York Phoenix Books Books Reviews :

The Theory of Everything The Origin and Fate of the Universe Audible Audio Edition Stephen W Hawking Michael York Phoenix Books Books Reviews

  • This is a magnificent set of lectures moving on from Stephen's previous theories, encompassing new thoughts, new experiments and an even closer study of the reason for everything. Compared to previous explanations Stephen includes God and an earnest look at why does the Universe exist anyway. To attempt to summarise the detail, this is just one book you need to read and then reread, it is his best yet and I have known him now for over 60 years.
  • I bought this book and also The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and this one was definitely more like the type of book I was looking for. The Grand Design was basically a physics book that just covered theory after theory but this one really connected the dots and made me realize a lot about our universe. Do yourself a favor and skip The Grand Design and just purchase this one.
  • Hawking never disappoints as he takes the most complicated subjects and makes it easy to understand and fun to delve into. A mind like his comes along once in a generation and we were fortunate to have him, as did all the students he touched during his tenure at Cambridge University.
  • *Please note the comments in the "update" towards the end of this review as the current version of the book does in fact include illustrations*

As someone who has purchased and read almost every book available by Stephen Hawking, I was excited about this book when I found it on . I have several other "illustrated" versions of Hawking's books and those have become my favorite versions because I love the large format and the illustrations inside are generally really well done and actually help with the text, especially for those people who have a hard time mentally visualizing the theories explained within.

For some reason I picked this book to be my first book by Hawking. Perhaps I thought I just couldn't "wait" for the physical book to arrive.

    Big mistake.

***The version of this book has absolutely NO illustrations whatsoever***

Let me repeat that The version of this "Illustrated Theory of Everything" has NO ILLUSTRATIONS. No color illustrations. No greyscale illustrations. No black-and-white illustrations. No line-art. None whatsoever. None on the 3G. None on the Reader for Mac. None on the reader for iPad.

There are not even any LINKS to illustrations.

In summation, do NOT buy this book on . If you want to buy it for , I wouldn't even recommend the non-illustrated version. I suspect most people would be better off with Universe in a Nutshell, The Grand Design, or Brief History of Time. The text only portion of this book is exceedingly short and offers essentially nothing new from those other books.

    ****Update March 8, 2012****
After the helpful suggestion of another -version reader, I contacted support and was able to get an updated version of the book. This does include illustrations, which add substantially to the book. The illustrations are good quality and appropriate. Reading the book on Reader for iPad works pretty well, with full-color photos which are in-line (two-finger gesture to expand the pictures). On my 3 ( with Keyboard), some of the images have very low contrast. Many of the images also have a light grey text which is somewhat difficult to read, even when expanded.

Other than the presence of illustrations in the updated kindle version, the best update is the presence of highlight boxes (kind of like side-bars but in-line) which break up the text and enhance the experience.

I am updating my rating to 3 stars. I would give it more, but the number of illustrations are rather sparse and for b&w owners, there are certainly limitations. I have other books which are not advertised as "illustrated" which have similar numbers of illustrations (chapter heading pictures, or just other pictures that enhance the content.)
  • Stephen Hawking was a good teacher he was clear, asked good questions, gave honest answers. And he also had a contagious enthusiasm about tackling complex problems.

Now that he is no longer with us, he remains with us through his writings. This book makes his present and endearing.
  • This book is a new edition of a book originally published in 1996 based in seven Cambridge lectures, basically describing some of the contributions of the author to cosmology and black holes. Among those the singularity theorems coauthored with Penrose, the Hawking radiation of black holes (of which the author himself claims that it would get him the Nobel Prize if found in nature), the no boundary condition, etc.

Some of the concepts are very clearly explained such as the second law of thermodynamics, the black hole horizon, black hole evaporation, virtual particles, etc, although some others are more difficult to grasp.

There are some small errors, mainly with numbers that should be printed in exponential notation.

Unfortunately these lectures predate the discovery that the universe expansion is accelerating and the detailed results of the Wilkinson probe.

In any case the lectures are excellent reading and contain a lot of very good information. I was specially attracted to the fact that until the 1920's it was almost unthinkable that the universe is expanding, whereas it should have been a logic deduction of Newton's gravitational law and the fact that the universe is not collapsing.
  • It's always difficult to write about such very complex and dry questions as the physics of the origins of the universe and implications thereof. Usually the result is either too technical and hermetical or too shallow and generic.
In this book, Dr. Hawking manages to provide a very good insight into the kind of questions that scientists are trying to answer in relation to the origins of the universe and the quest for a unified theory of physics, and of the rationale behind the different oprions and behind the "most probable" one.
This he accomplishes in a light and easy to read fashion, yet not simplistic, with even some moments of humor, without getting bogged down by convoluted arguments,
Not everyone will understand 100%, but even if you miss some details that would require some familiarity with mathematics and quantum physics, you will still understand most of it, enjoy it and come out with a solid chunl of new knowledge.

Lonely Planet Mexico Travel Guide Lonely Planet Brendan Sainsbury Kate Armstrong Ray Bartlett Celeste Brash Stuart Butler Steve Fallon John Hecht Anna Kaminski Tom Masters 9781786570802 Books Reviews

  • this guide to the entire country of Mexico is perfect for travelers. although the descriptions of each major city a tourist would likely visit is a bit spare, it does highlight the major sights, eats, hotels and shopping experiences. it also includes very helpful info on pronunciations, tipping, cultural no-nos and other very useful, basic necessities of getting by while traveling through mountain, jungle, coastal and mountainous terrain. cultural norms are different, foods will change, and climate will change dramatically. knowing the information given in "Mexico" will enhance your trip enormously. read it. twice. take it with you. you'll be more confident of yourself as an expat in mexico.
  • The cover picture on this one was so beautiful that it swayed me to buy it. I wish I could return it. The content is so thin. After the first few pages it’s mostly just listings for hotels and restaurants with phone numbers. That’s not useful to me at all. I assume most people would just google that info. Anyway, I ended up getting a Rough Guide and it has loads more useful information and is something you can actually read through to prep for your trip.
  • I wish Lonely planet would split Mexico by regions... no one can visit Mexico in a single trip, and this book is like a general overview. not good for region or if you visit a state for more than a week or so. They should do something like el bajio (western Mexico), Mexico city and surrounding, South east or Peninsula, south west, northern Mexico and Baja.
  • Very useful on our trip to Mexico City. The restaurant attraction views were spot on, and they added in a lot of good historical and cultural background.
  • Good information and easy to use. Love Lonely planet books!
  • Great Book, Wonderful condition
  • Many years ago when I started visiting Mexico the lonely planet guides were extremely helpful. They covered the entire country and had a wide range of recommendations for hotels, in terms of prices and locations. When I checked out the current version from the library, I was disappointed. Sections of the country (e.g., the state of Tamaulipas) no longer are covered and the hotel recommendations are best described as gentrified. Were I to have no choice but to limit myself to the places and hotels described in this book, I think I would just stay home.

Babe the Kid The Legendary Story of Babe Ruth and Johnny Sylvester eBook Charlie Poekel Julia Ruth Stevens Reviews

  • Anything involving Babe Ruth is part fact and part legend. Johnny Sylvester is part of the legend who went on to success and his storyis largely unknown.
  • I wanted this book as I am related to Johnny Sylvester and never knew the whole story The price was unbeatable.
  • I'm not sure if this is a self-published book, but it has that feel to it. The writing is flat, and there's a ton of detail that just isn't interesting. It's more of a family memoir than a book for general interest.

That being said, however, it is a complete account of a well-known baseball incident that has been turned into myth. This book does a good job of unraveling the layers of myth and setting the moment in its proper context. Plus, it has tons of great pictures.

Remarkably, the basic outline of the myth is true. Babe Ruth, the greatest baseball player ever, really did sign a baseball for a dying young boy on which he wrote that he'd hit a home run for the boy in the World Series. And then Ruth hit three homers in that game -- a stunning feat in any game, not to mention a high-stakes World Series in which he'd made that promise. Though the promise wasn't known at the time, it was publicized immediately after. And when the boy recovered from a disease that was fatal for many people, the story was cemented in history. That the boy lived into his late 80s, went to Princeton and served for 3 years in WWII, had a prosperous career and was able to visit The Babe when he was dying (to young) makes it even more remarkable.

    Sweet stuff.
  • I'm not a big baseball fan. I can admit that. I love history though, and like nearly every other American I'm a sucker for pop culture. Most of us tend to think of celebrity in terms of what Paris Hilton wore last week, but this story reminded me of a time when doing something nice instead of something stupid was what got lots of publicity.

Babe & the Kid tells the story of Babe Ruth and his enduring friendship with a young boy during and after the 1926 World Series. The kid, Johnny Sylvester, was seriously ill when a kind gesture by the most popular pro ballplayer of his day literally made the difference between life and death. What I found most interesting was the fact that their friendship endured for years afterwards, a testament to Ruth's character. His visit and gift weren't a publicity stunt staged for the camera, but the genuine actions of a true hero.

Poekel has done a fine job of researching the facts related to an iconic story in American sports. Especially welcome were the numerous photographs and memorabilia he was given access to through the collection of John Sylvester, Jr., who maintains the scrapbook his father kept of his extraordinary friendship with some of the leading athletes of his day. The book is well-written, an easy and accessible read, and thoroughly enjoyable.
  • I have heard this story many times in movies and books - but this is the accurate full-telling of well-researched facts. Very interesting and educational. A must for any Yankee or Ruth fan.

Fodor The Complete Guide to the National Parks of the West Fullcolor Travel Guide Fodor Travel Guides 9781640971264 Books Reviews

  • Fodor's The Complete Guide to the National Parks of the West has plenty of detail without being overwhelming. We particularly liked the guide's suggestions of what to see and do based on the amount of time a person had for that park half day, full day, two days, etc. That not only simplified the prioritizing for us but also their suggestions worked very well for us. In addition we liked how the guide included what is also nearby for seeing/experiencing while in the area.

The information is well organized and easy to sort through. It is worth the money. If purchased well in advance, you can do a lot of your planning with its guidance.
  • I used this book on a recent family trip in July 2013. My family went to seven national parks on the west side of the United States and the book was very helpful. It would help more if they listed a few more places to stay. (we used our AAA book to help find some of our accommodations). Stop by "Hell's Backbone Grill and Boulder Mountain Lodge for the most incredible food in the USA and comfortable, luxurious, restful, and peaceful accommodations at the lodge) in Boulder, Utah.
  • It says complete but it really isn't. It is a nice intro to each park. You should follow up with either another book specifically about the park, or go online. I have found that Trip Advisor and the NPS websites pretty much give you everything you need to know for free.
  • For those who like to travel in the west and its national parks, this guide gives a very good overview of things to do and what to expect in each western National Park. Since we are planning a trip out west this summer, it is a helpful guide.
  • The internet is a great tool for trip-planning, but this book does wonders. Great maps, solid photos, honest advice, helpful tips--this book has offered it to me time and time again when it comes to my annual camping trip to various western national parks. I've owned it for a few years, but while looking up information on Glacier National Park earlier today, I felt the need to log onto and leave a glowing--and long overdue-- positive review of this book. Love it!
  • My personal "bucket list" includes visiting every National Park in the West----this guide has it all! That is, all the information needed to plan a trip as well as use during the trip. Maps, recommendations for both short and long stays, all recreation opportunities, lodge/camping info in detail, where to eat both inside and outside each park, when to visit, flora/fauna, how to avoid crowds, emergancy services and phone numbers, etc. Truly a complete guide indeed in one little handy carrying case. This was one of my best purchases for value/usefulness.
  • Every year, my husband and I choose a region of national parks to tour for 7-10 days, and this book provides fabulous self-driving tour recommendations with maps of all the parks so you can plan out your trip well in advance.
  • This is my second edition of this book (previous one is about 20 years old). I like to use it in combination with the National Geographic Guide when out west because it has info that the other doesn't - especially helpful when planning accommodations and places to eat. It's also great when deciding my next trip - it's got some wonderful write-ups of the western parks.

Acclaimed as one of the most exciting books in the history of American letters, this modern epic became an instant bestseller upon publication in 1974, transforming a generation and continuing to inspire millions. This 25th Anniversary Quill Edition features a new introduction by the author; important typographical changes; and a Reader's Guide that includes discussion topics, an interview with the author, and letters and documents detailing how this extraordinary book came to be. A narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son, the book becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions of how to live. The narrator's relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning; the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion, and humanism. Resonant with the confusions of existence, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a touching and transcendent book of life.

"In high school I would have told you this is my favorite book. I just re-read it 2 decades later. And I realize that I grasped about 20% of it at the time. Maybe. Something about the meandering philosophical flow captured my imagination at the time. But reading it now, as a father, I grasp the concepts underneath. I don't readily admit this but I wept at the end. Then I read the afterward and totally lost it. Beautiful, courageous work."

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance An Inquiry Into Values edition by Robert M Pirsig Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

  • In high school I would have told you this is my favorite book. Beautiful, courageous work.
  • Looking at the reviews here, this book is loved by hundreds and reviled by a small percentage. I wonder what causes so much passion? It's wonderful that we have, among those who gave the book just one star, so many people who are so far above it intellectually -- too familiar with philosophy, too personally enlightened, perhaps -- to find any value in it. But I would like to point out to the subset of our best and brightest, those who tell everyone else not to waste their time reading it, that just because you got nothing out of the book doesn't mean no one else will.

One of the complaints I see here is that there isn't much of the title's Zen nor much motorcycle maintenance, either -- and I note that the author says something about this in his introduction, so it must be true, right? -- yet I believe there is plenty of both. If the reader is expecting an introduction to Zen or a How To manual on motorcycle maintenance, those will not be found. It's not even the author sharing his enjoyment of either of the two fields with his audience. But the themes that run throughout the book explore many of the same ideas the Buddha did, and several concepts important to motorcycle maintenance that will not be found in manuals are discussed throughout the work. But the title really represents the duality that Pirsig puts under his microscope Zen represents the hippie "go with the flow" attitude that is contrasted to the "slice and dice" schemes of technology, via motorcycle maintenance. And in the end, the title doesn't say just motorcycle maintenance; it's the "Art " that's critical, because one thing the book is aiming for is to show us that the science of technology is an art -- or at least should be an art -- and that the two ways of looking at life don't need to be in opposition, but can be quite naturally blended, to the benefit of all concerned.

It might seem like the novel is caught in its time, with language about those who see things as "groovy" vs. "the squares" but the dichotomy between the two has been under discussion in various forms for centuries romanticism vs. empiricism, passion vs. logic, science vs. religion. The same split is found today underlying two sides of the debate over climate change. If the book is not approached as being literally about Zen and motorcycle maintenance, but as using these as stand-ins for concepts that can be much larger -- or even much smaller -- there is a lot to be gained here.

Another complaint is that the protagonist is not sympathetic, but that's because this isn't a novel written from the romantic side, nor, really, the empirical side -- it's not even a novel, though it reads a lot like one -- it is a true-enough tale of relationships between two related men, and a father and a son, and a road trip that carries with it time for plenty of slow discussion of philosophy. The book takes its time putting the pieces together, and the author isn't trying to win our love -- if you can approach the book on its own terms rather than with a whole load of expectations about what it should do and how it should do it, you may get something out of it -- but to truly enjoy it, you've got to go with the flow, you know?

I know I get a lot out of it every time I read it. I love road stories, and this one is paced just like a real long-distance trip, with long stretches of time to think things through interspersed with short breaks for taking care of the business of life. That what's going on in the environment, relationships, and other encounters reflects what's being thought through in the long stretches is a small bonus. The writing is clean and evocative, enjoyable. For the most part, the carefully constructed introduction to all the elements needed to understand the philosophy is gentle enough to be clear and not overly taxing, at least until the deepest parts, which can be hard to follow (and for good reason). The elements of psychological mystery captivate me each time.

I first read ZAMM the year it was released, in the mid-70s, and have read it at least every five years since then, and each time I thoroughly enjoy it. The first time through, I could not follow the philosophy all the way down into the descent into madness it brought on. Five years later -- with time for the ideas to be examined through my own life -- I got it, even agreed with it. This time, this reading, is the first time I ended up doubting the validity of the greatest philosophical insights the story offers. Ironically, it's my deepening understanding of Buddhism that changed my mind.

There really is a lot of Buddhism in this book, and not specifically Zen, either, but the deepest themes common to all forms of Buddhism. The questions about the wisdom of dividing the world up into a duality of the physical vs. the mental, of seeing ourselves as somehow separate from everything else, these were explored by the Buddha, too, though the framework he used to discuss these ideas was -- obviously -- nothing to do with motorcycles. In Dependent Arising he, too, considers how it comes to be that we split the world in two. "Name and form" he calls this split, and later thinkers have described what he was talking about as the same subject-object division that Pirsig is mulling over in ZAMM. The Buddha, though, says that it is "desire for existence" -- not quality -- that, to borrow Pirsig's phrase, "is the generator of everything we know". I tend to agree with the Buddha because I can see in our lives, and through our sciences, what that desire for existence is and why it drives us to divide the world up the way we do, and exactly how it leads us into trouble. I can't say the same for Pirsig's metaphysics, but that doesn't stop me from deep enjoyment of the book. I hope to have another half-dozen five-yearly reads, if I'm lucky, and -- who knows -- maybe I will come around again to see it the way he does.
  • I read this book back in the 70s, and i dont think I finished it back then.

I decided to read it again because Im an avid motorcycle rider and follow eastern spiritual teachings.

The book is not informative on Zen, motorcycle maintenance or operation, philosophy, except on a very superficial level. The author has written a loose autobiography of his own troubled life and mental illness issues, which is sad and tragic, and offers very little except the chance to feel some empathy for the him and his family.

There are several points in the story where the author loses his credibility. When he talks about travelling to India and learning about Buddism from trained teachers, but then confesses that he never actually practiced meditation, and then rejected the teachings, his experience it completely invalid. Meditation is not something you talk about and grasp mentally and then progress. It is something you do. It is an experience that you engage in, it alters the way you think and your perception of the world. If he had actually sat down and practiced mindfulness meditation then he would not have become obsessed with words contests between Greek philosophers, and ended up having a nervous breakdown and being subjected to electroshock therapy. He rejected the teachers in India who would have helped him gain understanding, and ran off on his own path to personal destruction.

I dont know why this was a best seller in the 1970s. It does not hold up after all these years. If you want to learn about zen and Buddhism read the public domain book "Mindfulness in Plain English". If you want to read a book that really touches on the zen of motor vehicle repair, get the original VW manual by John Muir "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive". Even if you dont own a vintage air cooled VW vehicle, it is a good insight into hands on mechanical work, and the positive mental state that this book fails to capture.

I wish I had found an honest review of this book before I purchased it for my kindle, I would have skipped it and read something else.

La révolution " Me Too " était en marche.
