"As the subtitle suggests, John Compere is indeed a fifth-generation minister who left it all behind in pursuit of a life built on truth and integrity. And that's what this easy-to-read and delightfully enjoyable work pursues as well. As John shares, "I hope I live long enough to see this country, indeed the entire world, begin to reject the nonsense that religion is what makes a person moral. I hope to see more and more intelligent people who value reason give themselves permission to outgrow religion, to give credence to evidence, to burst free from faith." And it's "towards that end," John says, that he offers his own 45-page deconversion story, followed by twelve essays exploring the very topics that so influenced his journey.
Those essays and topics include: The Bible: It Ain't Necessarily So; The Sad History of the Church; Jesus as Paul Bunyan; Faith: Believing without Evidence; The Born-again Syndrome; Bloody Religion: A Bloody Shame; In Religion, Sex is Spelled S-I-N; Untouched by an Angel; A Realistic Look at Prayer; Requiem for the Soul; Atheists in the Pulpit: The Clergy Project; and Secular Humanists Viewpoints.
This updated 2016 edition includes a chapter on The Clergy Project, a groundbreaking endeavor that launched the following year after this book's original release. If the stories of deconverted religious leaders is of interest to you, you will not want to miss this edition. Here John shares the story of a Muslim imam in the Middle East who literally fears losing his head should his true convictions ever be made public. Full disclosure here, I count John as a good friend. He and I work together at The Clergy Project, and I can tell you, TCP is filled with simple ordinary former pastors just like John and myself. But we've come to a point where we just couldn't believe all the god-stuff anymore. And for this reason, John Compere's book is a must read for anyone interested in things of faith and the leaving of such things behind."

He is funny and bright and has an abundance of material at his disposal. Without a doubt, Dr. Compere has lead an interesting life and he shares some of it in the book. Here is a man raised in the church to become a minister. He wanted to believe but found that he couldn't. The dogma was just too unbelievable. When it became unbearable, he left the church. His family rejected him, his friends turned their backs to him, yet he persevered. He outlines some of the reasons in his book. An excellent read! It should be under the Christmas tree of every believer in your family.

Towards the Light A Fifth Generation Baptist Minister's Journey from Religion to Reason - John is a helpful voice of reason and hope in the dialogues between Christianity and Atheism. I couldn't recommend this book and his wisdom through other venues highly enough.
- I received a copy of John's book complementarily shortly after joining the "Clergy Project". The qualities of steadiness, patience, reason, and courage to go where his heart and head indicated, atheism, are useful and strengthening for anyone on a similar path.
- I got a lot out of this book. I enjoyed looking at things from a perspective I hadn't utilized before. A good read. I will never look at a dead carpet in the same way.
- John's journey is written with honesty and clarity, along with a very enjoyable style (lots of humor). I recommend this book to anyone who has left their supernatural religious beliefs for reality, as well as those who are on the fence about their beliefs and want to learn a new and rational way of thinking.
