CrockIt Barbara Murray 9781570720420 Books Reviews
- I had originally panned this book in an earlier review because it had a 'dump it in and turn it on' feel. But I decided to give it another try, mostly because 1. The other reviews were so positive and 2. Most people use a slow cooker for convenience.
Well all I can say now is 'mea culpa'. Crock-It offers some tasty meals for people who don't have time to spend hours in the kitchen. A nice feature is that most of the ingredients are probably in your cupboard or refrigerator. This is a great gift for someone new to the kitchen or a college student. And of course, you can always toss in spices and herbs that appeal to your taste. If you are giving a slow cooker as a gift, Crock-It would be the perfect companion. - I bought this book when I was a working mom. Recipes are great and easy to manage! Had a full meal ready each and every night I arrived home. Now that I'm retired, I still use the recipes for family gatherings and special occasions! Great Book.
- I bought my first copy of this book at a little gift shop in NC while on vacation. It did have a down home feel to it. I have since made many recipes in the book and I was pleased with all of them. I somehow lost my copy and I am now ready to order another one as I miss the recipes. Don't forget to try the deserts. My kids love chocolate and they enjoyed the recipes with the chocolate cake mix. Comfort food )
- Here is the strength of this book these are REAL recipies for real food that real people actually eat. There's no weird ingredients, no time-consuming techniques, no long winded directions. Simple, to the point, good, old-fashioned home cooking, except the pot does all the home-cooking. It's great. I love how it's hand-written and full of humor - it really feels like my friend gave me a few of her favorite recipies.
- I was incredibly disappointed with this book. A lot of recipes are recipes I wouldn't even try. For instance, the author suggests for breakfast that you cook white rice in the crockpot overnight and serve it with soft boiled eggs. Excuse me? My family would laugh me out of the kitchen if I tried to serve this!
But I did try 5 of the recipes. The first I tried was the meatballs and gravy, and while it was very good, it tasted no different when cooked in the oven! But it was ready about 3 hours sooner. The other recipes I tried were Country Ham, Roaster Bag Chicken, Barbie-Q In a Bag, and the Chicken Risotto. The Chicken Risotto was completely tasteless. The Roaster Bag chicken was good, but nothing spectacular. The Barbie-Q Chicken was decent, but again, nothing spectacular. And the Country Ham was awful. The ham itself was good, but she suggests you put it on a rack of sweet potatoes. I thought the glaze would sweeten the potatoes a little, but it practically disappeared with all the ham juice and I ended up with meaty ham-flavored sweet potatoes. Yuck!
All-in-all a huge disappointment. Most of the other recipes don't even sound appealing, like Chili Wheat, Tofu Chili, Oatballs in Gravy, lamb recipes. And I agree with the previous reviewer, recipes for things like burritos and tacos are useless. Who wants to spend all that time cooking the meat of a taco?
Useless waste of money. - I purchased this several years ago and used it frequently. Last year gave it to my daughter to 'borrow' - she is now enjoying the selection of recipes. I missed my copy and glad to repurchase.
- Highly recommend this book. Some of my favorite recipes. Also gives the calorie counts which you might wish you hadn't seen but helps with portion control!
- purchased for 96 yr old with failing eyesight. she loves it.
