- Not worth it. Save yourself $20!
Here's the book Write short, concise sentences in the active voice using plain language.
There is about $1 worth of useful info in a book costing $20, so if you see this at a yard sale or used bookshop for $0.50, pick up a copy. Otherwise, skip it. The book is just an updated version of an article written for a law review forty years ago, in 1978. Don't get me wrong, it does contain useful information, but unless you're illiterate or ESL, this is Writing 101. I feel cheated. - Plain English for Lawyers is a awesome book that can be understood at most levels in education. If this book is too complex, I recommend the book, Punctuation Plain and Simple, both books are almost matching in explanations verbatim except the latter uses even simpler language. Plain English for Lawyers differ by using explanations and examples from lawyer materials.
- I am a law student and english is not my first language. I have found this book to be invaluable and extremely well written. The ease of use, as well as the extremely well-written and informative content, makes it one of my go-to manuals for all my writing assignments.
That being said, I think the title may be misleading. Although it might be geared towards legal writing, the format and content would be appreciated by anyone looking to improve their writing skills- lawyer or not. - Great book. A must read if you are in law school or a practicing lawyer. Even if you think you are a great legal writer, this book will still help.
- Very helpful if you are a legal translator, it has law definitions very well explained!
- Informative, easy read that makes sense. I hope all law schools would use or at least recommend this to students. I hope all others in the law profession will read and use this books lessons. Simple, straight forward writing is the best practice. Old fashioned ideas about layering legal writing with heavy wordage is starting to become more enlightened. There should be no need to "hide" behind the traditional "Blah...Blah...Blah". In this helpful book - research and writing as it should be practiced.
- Plain English for lay folks, too. This is a good read, I enjoyed it very much.
- Legal writing was tough for me, because I love long and sophisticated sentences. This manual work-book has simple exercises that made me practice being concise and simple in my writing. Don't get this book if you're already a grammarian. You'll find it boring. Doing exercises from this book is like drinking a glass of milk a day. It's good for your legal-writing bones.
