Simple Fly Fishing Techniques for Tenkara and Rod and Reel Yvon Chouinard Craig Mathews Mauro Mazzo James Prosek Russell Chatham 9781938340277 Books Reviews
- I am crazy about Patagonia products. However, I think Chouinard oversells Tenkara. There is much more to fish, water, and the technology that is claimed here. To his credit, however, he is trying to demystify the "art" of fly fishing which has scared off many potential anglers. For that he deserves credit. In truth, however, I have learned a great deal more from Dan Gallardo of Tenkara USA and the proliferation of Tenkara enthusiasts that have emerged in the Western US. As for the package that included the book, a Temple Fork rod, some line and flies, one can find better equipment for less money on line.
- Yvon Chouinard lives by a simple life code that could make a big difference if we all would follow just parts of it.
I could never get the hang of Western fly fishing, no great coordination...I had read an article about how Yvon enjoyed Tenkara fishing in Montana, I had never heard anything about this fishing technique, it took a while to locate the gear, which isn't expensive in relation to Western style and it's really simple and quick to learn...now I take my fair share of fish from the rivers close to Missoula, Montana.
I purchased this easy to understand book and feel it's helped me to better understand this simple style of fishing that is based on simplicity and not a lot of expensive gear...got to love that. - This has some great writing about tenkara and fly fishing, but isn't a good sole source for someone who's a beginner looking for the basics on how to catch fish with a tenkara rig. For that, I'd suggest the Curtis Creek Manifesto (not tenkara specific, but a great intro to how to fish with flys) and Tenkara Radically Simple, Ultralight Fly Fishing, which takes much the same approach as Curtis Creek, applied specifically to tenkara.
All that being said though, this book is inspiring, does a pretty good job of giving you some basic information, and can get you out there with your line wet. - This book contains a series of short chapters that are very meaningful to a fly fisher of average experiences. I found the quick -to-the - point experience sharing to be a gold mine of details. This will be my go to reference for new adventures on new waters. The multi-author reasoning is clear and the choice of techniques is rock solid. There exist many fly pattern books with all too little exposure to techniques of fly employment. This author team has made simple what I thought was expert guide's advises.
- I checked this out from the local library and discovered that it has enough in it to justify owning a copy. I have another book on the subject and this one complements it very well. The authors have experience in abundance and they used it to add richness to the content beyond the instructional parts. It's a good read and a good reference.
- Though I greatly respect Yvon's accomplishments as a climber/mountaineer and as a fly fisherman, I was not that impressed with this book. It is more a collection of short articles and anecdotes than it is a book on Tenkara. Yes, I picked up some good tips, but I came away not feeling like I had a good grasp of the uniqueness of this approach to fly fishing.
- This is exceptional! Well thought out and well executed. I saw Tenkara on a business trip to Japan in the early '80's and no one could explain it although I knew it was some kind of fly fishing. I bought my 1st Tenkara rod 4 years ago, now own 5 and fish Tenkara ~90% of the time. And I do that because this fly fishing discipline, simple as it is, is really as effective as indicated in the book. I think I have every book in English ever printed on Tenkara and this is the one every person interested in Tenkara should buy and devour first.
- Gift for my brother, who could probably write his own book on fly fishing in the West!!! Good book.....
